A Misrepresentation of a People
American media has limited the portrayal of Asian Americans to roles and stereotypes that rob them of an individual identity. Movies only cast Asian women as the same three-four characters. Asian men are offered an even fewer amount. These stereotypes in media also exist in journalism. There is a large group of Americans that are constantly being misrepresented and forced to conform to stereotypes that almost dehumanizes them.
Movies are very popular in American culture; hundreds are produced each year, and they make millions. There are magazines dedicated to documenting the lives of the actors, and groups of people that obsess over them. They’ve become a staple in our country, and yet they do not portray everyone fairly. America is supposed to be this melting pot, where people from all over the world can come to and pursue their dreams. Shouldn’t our movies portray this huge aspect of our society? Unfortunately, many minorities are left with stagnant, flat characters that only portray the stereotypes that exist about them; particularly Asian American actors.
